The idea of spirituality without god seems weird to many. That doesn’t seem possible. Is is that even possible? I know. It goes against everything you may have learned as a child about religion and about god. In most of the western world religion and god are one.
If you were raised with any religion in your household, then you know religion and god are basically one and the same in most people’s minds. There’s virtually no difference. But spirituality and religion can be vastly different from each other and in this article you will learn why.
In this article you will learn what spirituality without god is and that this is something you can experience for yourself. Having spirituality without god doesn’t mean you are going to hell or doing something demonic. It does mean that you are opening your mind to other concepts that may be more in alignment with who you are currently. Ideas that may be more supportive of your growth and development. This exploration can pave a new path forward for you of growth and self discovery.
Read on to find out how you can embrace spirituality without god, why you shouldn’t be afraid of it and the ways that it can heal and benefit your life.
What You Need To Know About Spirituality Without God
1. Can spirituality exist without god?
The answer is yes spirituality can exist without god. Particularly if you are practicing a spirituality that is not rooted in western culture.
There are many cultures throughout the world that practice their belief systems in completely different ways compared to christianity in the western world. For millennia, other spiritual systems existed and thrived where they did not have the central figure of “god” the way we do here in the west.
Hinduism, Buddhism, Yogic philosophy, Indigenous African religions and spirituality, among many many others, pre-date christianity by thousands of years. Their definition of god is completely different from our own. And the ideas they hold about god are not punishing and brutal.
These belief systems often emphasize a relationship with self. They use guiding principles and internal self study to achieve oneness with their creator. These ideas have supported their community and culture and continue to do so to this day.
So yes, spirituality can exist without god. To get there though, you will have to allow yourself to let go of the ideas of god you previously held that were most familiar to you.
2. What is spirituality vs religion?
I have written multiple times on spirituality vs religion and how they differ from each other. You can read those other posts here and here.
The main difference is that spirituality is personal. It can be tailored to a person’s own experience and what they are seeking. You are not given a set of rules to follow in spirituality. You look into your own heart and find what feels right for you. You are encouraged to trust that and let that guide you.
It can include other people if fellowship and community is something you are seeking. It can also be practiced as an individual experience. Also spirituality can continue to evolve and expand without end. It can grow with you as you grow.
Religion of course can have a lot of dogmatic ideas. You are given a faith and a religious text and told to adhere to these ideas. If you don’t, most religions tell you that something bad or ominous will happen to you for disobeying the rules that you were given.
I would say that the biggest difference between spirituality and religion is that with religion you are given something from an external source outside of you. With spirituality, it is a discovery that takes place mostly within you and unfolds from there. With spirituality the direct experience of the individual is what matters most.
3. Can you be spiritual and believe in god?
You most certainly can be spiritual and believe in god. You don’t have to abandon god to be spiritual. But your idea of god may expand and deepen over time and you should be open to that experience. Some folks have no relationship with god when their spiritual path opens up for them. Then once they are on their path their experience becomes personal and deeply nourishing to them.
4. What does finding spirituality mean?
Finding spirituality means opening yourself up to a way and experience that speaks to you, your experiences and the greater world and universe around you. It means finding answers that make sense for you. It means opening yourself up to a greater reality that can help you understand your life, experiences and how they have shaped you. It can often put your suffering in a context that does not blame or shame you which allows for healing to occur within you.
5. Is leaving religion necessary for spirituality?
No, leaving religion for spirituality is not necessary. Many people find that their spirituality can enhance their religious faith. It is not an either or equation. It is a matter of finding what works and speaks to you and finding your balance between the two.
I think the reason this concept can be challenging for most people is that their faith told them it’s an either or situation and that if they explored anything outside their faith they would be in trouble. This has scared them and made them afraid to explore what’s out there.
6. Does spirituality have a god?
Many spiritualities do have a god but it is not a god similar to the one in western european culture. Their god is not white. Their god looks like them which could mean black, brown, Asian, etc. Their god might not have a gender. Or sometimes their god is personified as female, which again goes against the westernized patriarchal concept of god.
As you go deeper into what is out there you will find it is very wide and expansive and often reflects the diversity of the people on the planet.
In conclusion, embracing spirituality without god is possible. You just have to keep an open mind and follow what you are curious about or interested in. Having a relationship with god does not have to be a central component of your spirituality if that idea makes you uncomfortable or is not in alignment with where you are currently. Or growing this relationship within a spiritual non-religious context can become one that is important to you. It’s entirely up to you.
I hope you enjoyed this article on spirituality without god and that it answered some of the questions you may have. I wish you well on wherever your spiritual journey takes you.
